Woodgrove Shopping Centre, a major regional hub in Melton West, Victoria, approximately 38km west of Melbourne’s CBD, attracts over 7 million annual customer visits, serving as a dominant retail, dining, and social nexus for the rapidly expanding City of Melton and the broader western corridor. Recognizing the critical need for reliable power infrastructure, Woodgrove proactively addressed the end-of-life of its original Main Switchboard with a complex and carefully orchestrated upgrade.
The replacement presented significant challenges due to the necessity for continuous operation of the bustling shopping centre and the constraint of installing the new switchboard in the exact location of the old one. The existing switchboard’s capacity and the numerous tenants it supplied rendered a single overnight swap infeasible, necessitating meticulous multi-day and night planning.
To navigate these complexities, Woodgrove engaged SEDAC, renowned for its proven expertise in planning and executing challenging and critical projects. SEDAC devised a strategic approach involving the deployment of a temporary main switchroom and switchboard powered by a temporary generator. This allowed for the seamless transfer of all tenants to the temporary system. Once all services were running on the temporary infrastructure, the outdated switchboard could be safely removed, and the new, upgraded unit installed in its place. The final phase involved a carefully managed transfer of all tenants back to the new main switchboard.
This intricate project was meticulously planned over a week and executed with precision. Demonstrating exceptional project management and technical expertise, SEDAC ensured that not a single tenant experienced an unplanned power outage. Furthermore, the entire upgrade was completed on schedule and within the allocated budget, ensuring the continued smooth operation of this vital community asset.
